Strategy in business is a fantastic concept. The idea that you can decide what you want to achieve, write it down and then design the ways and means to get to your end goal, is just brilliant.
But then go and ask your people what your strategic goals are, or whether they can remember the organisation’s mission statement and well.........
Strategy works in the boardroom pretty much all the time. But if it doesn’t achieve the respect amongst the rest of the organisation, it won’t amount to much in the end.
To gain that respect people need to understand what the organisation wants to do and why, how it relates to them and why they are a very important part in the process. Your strategy needs to be well written, pragmatic, challenging and in essence, good common sense. It should not contain rhetoric, fanciful statements or unrealistic dreams.
